Entry Description

The clients for The Brighton Residence had great land, which provided the foundation to create something exceptional. Rob Mills Architects believe that Landscape, Architecture and Interiors are one; these three elements together create the experience of great living; the primary role of this residential project.
An underlying principle of the design is to capture as much space as possible and to provide the opportunity for the owners to live both internally and externally. This was achieved by purposefully setting the building to one side of the site and adopting a modernist approach; allowing each space to open up to the next. The moment you step onto the property you are able to see from one end to the other, across and through landscape, water and living spaces to the rear boundary. By creating a seamless transition between inside and outside without obstacles such as walls or window frames, it enables the owners to live within their landscape.
The house stands tall and strong on the suburban streetscape, however the building’s subdued and limited natural material palette blends in with the landscape that forms its backdrop; successfully dissolving the boundary between the home and garden. The use of concrete for both the interior and exterior floors, grey walls and grey ceilings and highlights of understated bronze elements melt the background into the interior.
Great living is ultimately achieved in this building as it is cool in summer, warm in winter and has an abundance of fresh air. The inclusion of complex technology has been applied subtly and simply to heat the pool water, to cool and heat the house, for security and entertainment and ensures the building performs as intended without making the visitor aware of its steadfast presence.
