Entry Description

The Al Khor Private Hospital commenced on site in January 2016, once completed it will offer state-of-the-art emergency care and surgical facilities to a growing population, north of Doha, Qatar.
Oriented to minimize solar gain and present the buildings broadest, primary face to the street. The varied scale and massing of the various departments is intended to create an unintimidating, welcoming environment. The entrance plaza and public drop-off are clearly visible from beyond the site; patients and visitors are directed to the main entrance through this plaza where landscaping, water features and clear bilingual signage guide them into the building.
Traditional materials are used in a contemporary manner, including Coral stone panels which provide thermal mass and storage which dissipates heat during the cool evening period. A freestanding frame which rises as an end wall and continues across the roof covering high level building services and mitigate solar gain.

Bio

Sandra is a passionate environmentalist, architect, urbanist, and researcher, who has lived and worked in the UAE for over 25 years. She is a Fellow of the RIBA, the RSA, and the AoU. She is an award-winning designer who leads tangrams’ MENA region studio who were recognised as the “2019 MENA Architecture Firm of the Year” by the Middle East Economic Digest and who have received many international accolades including six sustainable design awards for five different projects in four years.
She founded, curates and presents the RIBA Gulf Chapters’ ongoing Sustainable Development Series.
