Pi Da alludes to “I am rooted, but I flow” from Virginia Woolf’s portrait novel, The Waves. The quote suggests being grounded in one’s identity and open to change. Described as two people meeting as an act of providence, the novel portrays “inyeon” and how all relationships are intertwined. In my interpretation of this quote and her novel, I address my roots in Korean heritage and navigating the “inyeon” relationships in my life. Throughout the collection, I redefine traditional Korean silhouettes and knotting styles, by exploring how these elements meld with contemporary style.
