Entry Description

The Star Ring, made by Ruchita Newrekar & Gillian Karatassos is a collaboration project for Gillian Trask. Star Ring was created with an intention of donating a part of the proceedings to Savannah's CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) ensuring every child in foster care has a fighting chance. Each piece of sterling silver is melted, and this exploration of pushing the boundaries of metal, with deliberate control of the heat, brings the sterling silver to life. Sculpting the sterling silver while molten creates an experience of empowerment. An energy that carries over to the wearer.

Ruchita Newrekar is a jewelry designer, currently pursuing her MFA in jewelry in Savannah College of Art and Design, USA. Born and raised in Mumbai, India she traveled to the United States to further her education and expand her understanding of jewelry. Her work belongs to both, commercial aspects of Indian jewelry and conceptual aspects of contemporary art in USA. As a professional writer and aspiring jewelry critic, this dual understanding of jewelry provides a unique point of view.
