Motorlight Wall

Entry Description

The Motorlight Wall is the next generation in variable angle uplights. A wall mounted light, it can be appointed singularly or as a series. It uniquely allows the owner the flexibility to choose a beam of between 10 and 120 degrees, providing a tight beam or wide wash of light, to suit different illumination purposes and create varying environments. It has been designed with both stylish homes and commercial buildings in mind. The Motorlight Wall is motorised and operated via a remote control, which can power up to 30 lights simultaneously, allowing you to control the shaft of light and brightness on each luminaire, individually or as a group. This enables you to synchronize multiple lights. The motorised shutter smoothly opens between maximum and minimum angle on a 45 second cycle. The remote itself strikes a beautiful form.

Bio

Jake Dyson studied Industrial Design at the prestigious Central St Martins College of Art and Design following a foundation course at Filton College, Bristol. He graduated in 1994 and began work designing retail interiors for two high profile designers, working on shops, cafes and clubs.
Jake then set up his own workshop, purchasing a mill and a lathe and started experimenting with a revolutionary new ceiling fan. His studio today is based in Clerkenwell and has a workshop attached.
Jake is happiest when in the workshop trying to turn a paper concept into a reality and is particularly proud that Motorlight is British designed and developed.
His approach is to first conceive a product and follow it through to the point of manufacture – unusual in a world where product design is usually separate from the development and manufacturing side.
Jake believes that having a “hands on” approach to creating prototypes, testing and subsequently finishing products is an essential part of the design process.

Jake Dyson’s Studio is lead by the young product designer with a small team of design engineers. They focus their efforts on coming up with new product ideas that are visually stunning and go where no one has gone before in providing innovative, functional benefits. The result is Motorlight – a cleverly engineered light, which provides both a broad ambient and precisely focused illumination for active mood lighting. With a remote control (that controls up to 30 lights), Motorlight Wall can be set to move gradually between an angle of 10 and 120 degrees or fixed at any point in between. When multiple lights are placed in a configuration, it provides part light sculpture, part light source. Described by Terence Conran as “beautifully engineered and delicious to look at”, the Motorlight family includes the Motorlight Floor (free-standing) and Motorlight Wall models, which will launch to both the commercial and residential markets in the U.S. during ICFF 2009.
