Prize(s)Silver in Print / Signs, Exhibits and POP Displays
Entry Description

Rumi Restaurant approached me to redesign their sign, as they wanted something different and organic. By using elements found in the restaurant, we managed to create a sign that highlighted Rumi's image. The new sign secured the loyalty of the already existing costumer base while attracting a new clientele. The result is a growth in business and a happy client.

Bio

I am from Senegal, yet grew up in Jeddah Saudi Arabia and later studied in Paris. Some of my deepest memories are those of colors - in Senegal the markets are alive with bright colored clothing of rich reds, ochre?s and greens. Many of the concrete or mortar buildings have also hand painted pictures, and colorful texts on their walls to tempt you in. In Saudi Arabia, the light is blinding and the landscape often washed out by the constant sun. The colors there, could not be more different, the beauty is of a more hidden nature, a more subtle form, as everything is obscured and compressed by that blinding light.

These kinds of early memories may in part account for my interest in and emotional attachment to color. My graphics work, tries to use color in innovative ways, but I suspect that my color sense is actually deeply rooted in my past, and that is why, it is different from many of my fellow students.

By the time I was thirteen or fourteen in Jeddah, I wanted to work in the design industry even though I did not really understand what that meant. To learn about the field, a professor, who was a fashion designer took me to her husband?s advertising company, where I learnt about the role of each member of the design team, and on my way back home, I can remember informing my dad about my big plans to be a designer.

Like most people at that age, I had little actual control over my future. Later as a student in Nice and Paris ? largely due to the way the French educational system is organized, I sadly found that studying arts was not possible at that time. Instead I studied marketing.

After graduating, my main focus became the study of Arts and Design. I came to Montreal, and enrolled at Vanier College, where I studied graphic design, design history and fine arts courses. It was a fantastic experience, which validated my interest in and commitment to design, not only as a personal form of expression but also I came to recognize the essential role it plays in uniting communities. With the portfolio I developed during that fall semester at Vanier, I successfully entered the Computation arts program at Concordia.

My first year in Computation Arts was very interesting and certainly worthwhile, in particular my studies in web based design. After awhile however, I began to feel that I was always working with virtual materials in virtual environments - and I realized that I loved to, needed to, create actual things. I wanted to work with materials, objects or projects with some physicality, some weight, texture and space. I recognize that I am at the beginning of my studies and that I have a lot to learn, but I am committed to the craft, curious about its aspects and willing to work very hard.
