The Peak Tower Revitalisation

Lead Designers
Entry Description

Set off to re-invent itself with new elements of vigour and festivity but maintaining the original spirit of the great iconic symbol of Hong Kong, the Peak Tower Revitalisation project successfully elevated this Number 1 tourist destination to new heights of retail and entertainment experiences.
The aim of the makeover of the Peak Tower is to increase the useable floor space and maximise retail opportunities, improve and maximise efficiency of the existing facilities, and to enhance the primary Hong Kong landmark with a spectacular new viewing and entertainment experience. The complex geometry of the original building structure posed a challenge to the project team in overcoming the decanting arrangement, phased handover, structural demolitions and alterations, while keeping the train service operational, and most of the shops open, during the renovations. Above all, it was imperative to maintain the original spirit of the great design but to inject new elements of vigour and festivity. Because of the building?s significance to the tourism industry, the project was set on a fast-track, priority course.
Because many of The Tower?s viewing galleries were not fully utilised, a new observation deck was located on the roof of the tower, providing a much improved, and wider, view. The existing viewing terrace is transformed into new shops and restaurants. New escalators carry tourists to the new observation desk, resulting in more visitor flow into the retail areas of The Tower. The major circulatory system was redefined, and the main entrance improved, with an additional entrance created on the east end of the tower. A new atrium enhances the transparency of the retail mall and provides a new gathering place for visitors. The ?Crystals?, as they are called, signify the welcoming retail entrances and engage directly with the people in the outdoor plaza in front.
