Entry Description

The Polyp Lamps investigate of expanding organic volumes and subtle irregularity in lighting. The Polyp shapes derive from fruiting forms, apples, pears, lemons, and more inspire variety through their patterns of growth and natural quirks. The design looks to illuminate, adorn, and diverge from rigidity in built environments.

Assembly becomes ornament as signature tabbed inserts create interplays of light and shadow across the Polyp’s surface. Flat-packing and assembled without hardware or glue, the lamps use a parametric algorithm to create wide reaching variations in form.

Bio

Justin Bailey (he/him) is a designer and Assistant Professor of foundations in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design at Indiana University Bloomington. Pushing, pulling, bending and intersecting, Justin is drawn to lightweight, gestural articulations in form and peculiar details. He evokes a looming future by depicting objects which appear conflicted in their presence as something organic or digital; fragments of imagined architectural scenes.
