A New Uniform for London Underground

With a 150 year history, London Underground has a proud
tradition of projecting a professional and welcoming image
to customers. The staff uniform has been an important
element in this so that a redesign needed to respect the
heritage whilst also being future facing. To ensure we had
a design fit for purpose we undertook a detailed
engagement process with staff to ensure garments
reflected the requirements of wearers across all roles and
genders. We invested in researching materials, ensuring
the uniform was comfortable because of its cut and through
the use of modern fabrics that wash easily, are a good
weight and breathable.
We arrived at a design that is not only practical and
comfortable but also stylish, and brings to the fore the
roundel that says “London’. There has been an
overwhelmingly positive reaction to the new uniform from
both staff and customers.
