Entry Description

Sankofa: a textile-focused maker space that aims to restore storytelling as a sensory, place-based activity. Situated in the Cypress Wetlands of Port Royal, South Carolina, the project finds its roots in Gullah Geechee culture and is centered on the craft of indigo dyeing. Combining sustainable architecture and materiality as memory, the workshop supports the sharing of knowledge and growth, motivated by the notion of "going back to retrieve what was lost." In an era of ecological vulnerability and cultural erasure, Sankofa reclaims architecture as a living medium.
