The Detroit River has been reshaped by industry at the cost of pollution, habitat loss, and inaccessible waterfronts—forcing it to “hold its breath.” The River Respirator reimagines the river as a living system. It purifies water through physical, biological, and chemical processes, restores biodiversity by creating habitats for fish, birds, and wildlife, and transforms neglected infrastructure into public parks and learning spaces. By merging technology, ecology, and community, the Detroit River can finally breathe again.
