When the Great Lakes Observing System approached DIG about designing a cloud-based platform to surface lake data, the first design challenge was creating an interface that appeals to both scientists and recreational users. The application, free to the public, needs to be user-friendly but able to clearly display data being transmitted every minute from sensors and monitoring platforms throughout the Great Lakes. The resulting design is a blend of the natural palette of the Great Lakes and high-contrast displays that can be easily read outdoors.
