Entry Description

In light of global imperatives such as rapid resource depletion and mass production waste, Flare introduces a sustainable alternative that challenges conventional materials used in product design. Flare explores and experiments with the living material SCOBY to develop a pendant light that displays the material’s most intriguing properties and potential. SCOBY, or Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast, possesses rapid growth, malleability, and renewability properties that demonstrate the broad spectrum of uses that it could bring to product design.

Bio

Hi, my name is Wei, though everyone calls me Paul.

I’m an Industrial Designer based in Sydney, Australia.

As a Chinese that grew up in Ecuador, I had the opportunity to experience distinctive and vibrant cultures that I draw inspiration from in my works.

My current interests reside in sustainable design and consumer electronics. I believe that by removing barriers between technology and people we are able to create a seamless digital future.
