Inspired by his aunt ? the British food writer Elizabeth David ? he sees the kitchen as much more than just a place to cook; it represents the social heart of the modern home. After graduating from the London Architectural Association School of Architecture in 1977, Grey set up a design studio and furniture workshop. In 1980, his reputation as a kitchen designer grew as he pioneered the concept of the ?unfitted? kitchen ? a philosophical idea relating to a more sociable design that incorporates free-standing furniture. His core design concepts focus on unfitted kitchen ergonomics, soft geometry, sociability in the kitchen, the blurring of indoor and outdoor environments and hard-wired elements of comfort. His clients include Sting, Howard Jones, Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Steve Jobs. Grey is also the author of three books: The Art of Kitchen Design (1994), The Hard Working House: The Kitchen Work Book (1997) and Kitchen Culture (2004). In addition to his writing, he travels around the world as a lecturer at industry events and advises a variety of companies, such as Electrolux and Maytag. In collaboration with Salford University Professor John Zeisel, Grey has recently been involved with neuroscience research projects studying architecture and well-being.
