“We want Authentic Japanese Design”, the client said. Japanese food culture is synonym to fresh seasonal ingredients fostered by Nature; Rather than immitating Nature literally, Japanese aesthetic is expressing Nature indirectly through reconstruction after abstraction. Question is, how do we express “Nature”? Responding to the brief, we chose to express Nature through force of Gravity, embedded in catenary curves (succumb) and horizontality (resist), encouraging appreciation of Japanese view on Nature, beyond the visual.
