Khadi

Lead DesignersHelena Bajaj Larsen
Prize(s)Gold in Textile And Materials / Textile Design
Entry Description

Khadi constitutes an Indian homespun cotton cloth often referred to as “the fabric of social change” due to its crucial role in the Indian Independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. My thesis by this very name is a contemporary take on an old story which is both close to my heart as it reflects my family history but also embodies my passionate relationship to textiles. The fabrics for the collection were sourced from Khadi shops around India and hand-painted over winter break using acid and pigment dyes on a variety of silks and other materials.

Bio

I am half-Indian, half-Norwegian but was born and raised in Paris where I attended school till the age of 18. I then spent the last four years studying Fashion Design at Parsons in New York. My focus from the beginning was on textiles design and the exploration of surface through print, knit and various other techniques. I attended Central St Martins in London for a semester in Spring 2016' in a program centered solely on Print Design, both digital and analog. For my senior collection I created a collection of garments made from hand-painted textiles: a technique I discovered as a kid.
