Entry Description

The continued absence of an Indian pavilion at the
Venice Biennale since 1947 instigated emotions of
loss, frustration and alienation in the Indian art
community. These feelings gave rise to a platform for
dialogue, the Missing Pavilion, an exhibition curated
by the students of JNU. Lopez Design was
commissioned to design the identity, posters,
brochures and invites for this exhibition. The black
and white commentary draws from the notion of
absence, highlighting this gap through the visuals. The
“I”, which is the very image of self and identity is left
out, while the dot remains, mysteriously suggestive of
a partial presence. Within the poster, wiping out of a
large portion of the typographical landscape reflected
the emotions arising from the absence of the country’s
identity in the globalized world. The identity touched
many hearts and gave birth to unanimous sentiments
in many, much before they visited the exhibition.
