Entry Description

Walking Caterpillar is a concept design for a community centre, Iqaluit, Nunavut. Pre-casted in concrete, the core cylinders support the mushroom-like spans. The lower part of the building is exposed to show the movements of people’s legs as if a caterpillar crawls. The floor is lit up by Lightfader, the interactive light floor activated by weight sensors. As a person walks on the lightfader floor, it responds to weight, gradually glowing with LED lights. Moreover, the joints between segments are made of translucent glazing dramatizing a feeling of being inside the abdomen of a caterpillar.
